Who is behind the survey?
The Sobey Art Foundation has been working with a national group of artists to guide the Foundation as it considers new ways to support contemporary artists. This group of past shortlisted and longlisted artists is working with Shoreline Collaboratives, leaders in equity-driven organizational change, to design and administer a survey for working artists that will inform recommendations on the future of the Sobey Art Award.
Why the survey?
The Sobey Art Award is Canada’s most prestigious title for contemporary art and is one of the most substantial prizes for contemporary artists in the world. Since its inception in 2002, the Award has evolved to provide more robust compensation and recognition to a broader range of artists. As the landscape of working as an artist has shifted over the past 20 years, it will continue to shift in the future. This survey aims to understand the working conditions, aspirations, challenges, and needs of professional Canadian visual artists to determine what programs and awards could best support artists to achieve success.
We hope to hear from a broad range of artists across Canada’s provinces and territories.
